FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - FROM LEXINGTON-FAYETTE NAACP
LEXINGTON, KY (May 22, 2015) – The Fayette County Public School (FCPS) Board Members appear to be at a crossroads of effectively overseeing district resources to improve schools for all children. Recently, they have shown that they are incapable of (1) researching and choosing a reputable search firm for the new Superintendent, (2) ensuring equity in the redrawing of school boundaries, (3) efficiently hiring and retaining minority teachers, and (4) managing the budget to ensure that Section 7 money is more available to the lowest performing schools. The Lexington-Fayette County NAACP says it’s time to expose the failing practices of FCPS administrators, more than ever, as the search for a new leader of this school system is underway. FCPS say that it is “All About Kids” but for the last 5 years, it appears that the adults (central office staff members and school board members) do what is best for “certain” kids.
The NAACP will be holding a news conference on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:30 pm at the Fayette County School Board offices prior to their next school board meeting.
Leaders will be discussing:
- FCPS efforts to hide information and not adequately answer Open Records Requests
- Lack of focus on hiring and excessive “pink slipping” of minorities in key positions (teachers, administrators) in the district
- The continued inequitable distribution of Section 7 funding to high poverty schools
There is a lot of work to do be done in the Fayette County Public Schools to ensure all our children get the best possible education. The Lexington NAACP wants to make sure all voices are heard and are at the table to ensure equitable distribution of wealth, education and opportunities are given to everyone across the board.
