Discussions are underway to develop a modified ordinance to move the minimum wage forward here in Lexington. The City Council needs to hear from the community TODAY on this issue as important actions could be taken starting as early as TUESDAY!
Please take a few moments and send an email to all city Council members at this address: [email protected]
This will automatically send your message to all 15 members of the Council.
Key factors are:
- We are long overdue for an increase in the minimum wage! Low wage workers are particularly impacted by rising costs in basics like rent, food and medical expenses.
- The currently proposed MW increase in increments over three years, will not reach $10.10 per hour until July 1, 2018. This is a modest and reasonable request and should not be reduced!
- After the three year phase-in period, the current proposal implements automatic adjustments based the Consumer Price Index (CPI). It is vitally important to include this provision so that our community can avoid annual legislative battles to assure wages keep up with costs of living.
- Contrary to the claims of opponents, volumes of research in actual experience in other states and communities shows that incremental increases in the minimum wage do not reduce low wage employment! In fact, increased incomes, particularly at the lower end of the wage scale, increase spending activity in the community, which in turn generates more business profits and employment opportunities. Economists refer to this as the “virtuous business cycle”. Better wages, more sales, more employment, creating a win-win situation for the whole community
- The positive impact for our community is significant! Estimates suggest as many as 41,000 workers in Lexington will see increased incomes when this is fully implemented.
Please support this effort and send an email right now!
Please send this on to others you know who might also send a supportive email!
!!! THANKS !!!
